It’s official! We’ve received our first assignments as priests. Before we open the envelopes and reveal the contents, a quick word on assignments:
As we’ve noted before, itinerancy is not just a fact of life for us, but a value of Dominican life, which in practice means we tend to move around every few years. Our first assignments are usually for four years. How are assignments done? We generally ask two big questions:
First, are we needed there? I.e., is there something for us to do? We want to be where we’re needed most.
Second, is this the best fit for us? This takes into account both the community of the faithful we work with, and the community of Dominican friars we live with. Dominicans are human -- some personalities just blend better and work better together, and we try to get the best environment for training new priests.
So, without further ado (insert imaginary drum roll here):
Br. Dominic DeMaio: Holy Family Cathedral, Anchorage, Alaska. We actually staff the Cathedral there, serving the Bishop and good people of Anchorage. Lots to do!
Br. James Junipero Moore: St. Thomas More Newman Center, Tucson, Arizona. This is a campus ministry to the University of Arizona. We have the good fortune of working with some of our Dominican sisters there as well.
Br. Augustine Hilander: St. Thomas More Newman Center, Eugene, Oregon. No, not all our Newman Centers have St. Thomas More as their patrons! This is a campus ministry to the University of Oregon, home of your fighting Ducks!
Br. Dismas Sayre: Most Holy Rosary Parish, Antioch, California. This is a very large, vibrant parish (5000+ families!), located in the East Bay, about 40 minutes from Oakland.
There you have it! All four of us are eagerly anticipating serving you soon. Very soon!
